Put Your Skills to the Toast: We Win, You Luge

Known by her friends as “KGaff,” “Gaffs,” and “KathGaff,” this California sweetheart took the Rice campus by storm two years ago.  When she’s not rockin’ problem sets or doing other cool CHBE things, she can be found riding horses with the Rice Equestrian Team. That’s right, not only is this California babe easy on the eyes, but she’s also a fierce competitor. Her celebrity transcends the mere mortal teenager. But don’t let her awesomeness intimidate you. Katherine is also an extremely humble, down-to-earth girl. When she isn’t at riding competitions, she spends time volunteering.  The past two years she was part of the planning committee for Pancakes for Parkinson’s, an annual fundraiser that takes place right here on the Rice University campus. Be glad you have such an awesome girl as your advisor.  At the end of the day, if you need a friend to talk to or an accompaniment to a public party, KGaff will be there with you through it all.

Daniel Imas is not a name that you will hear often at Rice University, or even at Lovett College. This is not because he is uninvolved, but because he is known far and wide by his nickname, Dimas (a perfect smashbangfusion of his first and last name). In high school, he was a nationally ranked debater because of his sharp wit, extensive knowledge of philosophy and ethics, and his ability to speak at 200 words per minute (there are videos, he’ll show you). At Lovett, he is active as one of the Secretaries on our Central Committee, a PAA, a Lovett Lads Coordinator, a Head Academic Fellow, and he will serve an almost unprecedented second term as Beer Bike Coordinator. His fairly eclectic music tastes range from Hoodie Allen to the Beatles to Wiz Khalifa to Lorde, and he is always willing to play DJ, as long as you don’t mind listening to him sing along.  The Dimasaur gets his nourishment from Canada Dry ginger ale, anything from Trader Joes, Torchy’s Tacos, and his beloved Chipotle. Once nourished, he is free to indulge his greatest passion: using his Amazon Prime membership to buy assorted items including but not limited to Mouse Trap, Chutes and Ladders, and a laminating machine, the practicality and worthiness of which should never be called into question in his presence.  He is the only person we know who uses a shoe horn daily, foreshadowing his future as a potential Russian grandpa. Dimas is one of the most fiercely passionate people we know, and his snarky sense of humor, affable nature, and undying loyalty to his friends are why you should count yourself lucky to have him as your Advisor.

Chelsea “CHEEEEELSEA” Henshaw, a rising senior from Sid Rich, is one of the most interesting characters you will meet at Rice. Hailing from the ATX (Austin, Texas), or more accurately Pflugerville, she is a true wildcard. Do not let Chelsea’s quiet nature fool you, she has a witty, sharp tongue, and will keep you in stitches! A true Nigerian princess you will only ever see her sipping from Smart Water! She drinks it because as a Pre-Med she appreciates all it can do for her.  As with all true Pre-meds, sleep is foreign to her, and all-nighters are her best friend. If you ever need aid in the art of studying, she is the right person to ask. If you cannot find her studying, you can find her shopping. If Rihanna is known for her song S&M, Chelsea is known for S&S. (Studying & Shopping) This girl is more knowledgeable about shoes than Michael Jordan, Christian Louboutin, or anyone else that could have popped into your head. From sneakers to high heels, if you have heard about it she has it. Fashion is not a hobby; it is a talent she has an abundance of. JUST TO BE CLEAR: She does not wear them; her shoes are lined up like an exhibit in a museum. Moreover, if you love fashion, make sure to take a tour.  As if these skills are not enough, she can BAKE! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?! (African Accent) If you have Chelsea as an associate, you are very much in luck!’

A Beautiful Mind,” the tour de force drama that claimed Best Picture at the 2001 Oscars, was based off of affable and intellectual Hanszen Sophomore Josh “Joshy” “Poppa Bear” Morse. Morse, who is 6 feet short, hails from Boca Raton, Florida, and does stuff with a calculator and paper pad that few today can even comprehend.  He made the theoretical bed that is Organic Chemistry rock. Josh is a passionate pre-med, who pours his hours into Empower—where Rice students help inspire and teach K-12 students in the STEM fields—and wicked cool research relating to lasers, mice, and medicine. But Josh’s impressive chops don’t end in the classroom. No, no, no. He can grow the best beard at Rice, and he’s not even 20. Moreover, Josh is the consummate gym-rat, regularly beasting his buddies on the racquetball court like Marty Hogan. And do you want to talk about devotion? He’s been cheering for the Red Sox even when they were the laughingstock of the MLB playoffs year-in and year-out. Speaking of sports, Josh was an instrumental member of the “Dream Team,” a group of strapping Hanszen freshman who last year dominated the Intramural flag football league to the tune of their first championship. Always friendly, always up to something good, Josh will undoubtedly be an incredible co-advisor.
